Whiskeys for Whiskers: Paw Patrol
If You Only Have 60 Seconds…
- Whiskeys for Whiskers is an organization dedicated to raising funds and bringing attention to local animal rescues.
- The actual event, Whiskeys for Whiskers, is a speakeasy-themed fundraiser that will include a tasting from 8 local distilleries.
- The rescue community is a tight-knit family, but they want others to know it is open to anyone who wants to get involved.
My coworkers and I love dogs, seriously, we love them. So, when we learned we were going to get to meet some very special canines, we got more than a little excited. The day was chilly, but our eagerness to meet new furry friends (let’s face it, all dogs regardless of age, are puppies) kept us warm. Our faces lit up as we saw Coleen and Jenny from Whiskeys for Whiskers pull into the parking lot of Southern Bleachery with Luke and Bandit in tow. These were only two examples of the dogs benefitting from the rescues being helped by the upcoming fundraiser.
As soon as the car doors opened we were greeted with two new, and very eager friends. Whiskeys for Whiskers is all about helping local animal rescues. More specifically, the cause is to help rescue animals that need a home. Luke, who is seven, was on the euthanasia list when he was rescued by Coleen’s friend. “We were told he was a lab/basset mix, but the only basset characteristic he has is the out turned front paws.” Regardless of what breeds his lineage is, it is no doubt that Luke is an incredibly sweet and loving dog. Along with Luke was Bandit. Bandit was a little bit more timid, but every bit as cute. He is an 18-year-old Pomeranian Sheltie mix, partially blind and deaf, but still a small ball of fluff and love. It was apparent these women were fantastic dog owners.
Benefiting Fur Babies
We weren’t just at Southern Bleachery to play with puppies (although that was an added bonus), we were at the venue where the Whiskeys for Whiskers event will be held on Saturday, April 14th. This is the inaugural year for the event, but the organizers hope this will be the first of many. Coleen lit up when she began to talk about the fundraiser. “This is our first year, hopefully, first annual. I had done a lot of event planning in the past, and I just got so burnt out on it. I took a few years off, but it pulled me back. This time I wanted an event that would help more than one rescue.”
In fact, Whiskeys for Whiskers benefits five rescues around the area. Every penny raised at this event will go to the rescues. Our community is a puppy loving one and many individuals have already donated their time and efforts. “Everyone working this party is a volunteer. They all have full-time jobs.” The list of rescues who are benefitting from the proceeds are Carolina Basset Rescue, Carolina Poodle Rescue, K9.5 Rescue, Lucky Pup Rescue, and Paved Paws Animal League.
Prepare Your Flapper Get Up
What exactly should you expect from the Whiskeys for Whiskers event? It will be a 1920’s speakeasy-style fundraising event you won’t want to miss. The evening will include a dance floor, silent auction, delicious food, and of course, drinks. At the center of it all will be a Whiskey tasting from eight local distilleries (Sugar Tit Moonshine, H&H Distillery, Southern Grace Distilleries, Gorget Distilling Co., Six & Twenty Distillery, Rock Bottom Distillers, Dark Corner Distillery, and Palmetto Distillery). There will also be a slideshow that will give you a glimpse of the precious animals you will be helping.
Get in on the action yourself at Foxy Roxy’s Speakeasy. Foxy Roxy has been known to be pretty rowdy, and in the event, she is arrested (you won’t want to miss this) she is going to need someone to take care of the speakeasy while she is “under glass.” You think you have what it takes? Then dress in your 1920’s best and prepare for a costume contest. The dress code for this fundraising event is formal/semi-formal and flapper dresses are always a bonus. The organizers encourage you to have some fun with it. It is a speakeasy theme after all. However, even if you aren’t familiar with the rescue community, you can still have an amazing time at Whiskeys for Whiskers.
Small Rescues Need Love Too
The rescue community is a very tight-knit one. “It is like living in a small town. Everyone knows everything.” Years ago, an event was held with the name Cosmos for Critters. The event was very popular, and so the rescue community has been clamoring for something similar ever since. Lucky for them, Coleen had the idea of Whiskeys for Whiskers. “People are excited about the event, but not many people are aware of it.”
With so many pet rescues across the region, many of them can get lost in the shuffle. There is also the problem of people gravitating towards rescues and shelters who have money to advertise.
By helping these rescues, you are helping these loving animals find “fur”ever homes, and helping people find their “heart dog.” I had not heard this phrase before, but Coleen informed me it is finding your dog equivalent of a “soulmate.” It is a truly adorable thought.
How to Get Involved
Tickets are still available for the fundraiser. There are two levels of tickets. The first has been dubbed the “Taste Tester” ticket. This ticket includes the entrance to the event, your food, a punch card, and a free alcoholic beverage at the bar. This ticket goes for $55. The other ticket available is the “Designated Driver” ticket. This gets you into the event, your food, and one non-alcoholic drink at the bar. This ticket runs for $45. Both tickets will be $10 more at the door. You can purchase tickets on the Whiskey for Whiskers website here.
If your love for these furry friends extends beyond just wanting to attend the event, there are still opportunities for you to get involved. You can find other ways to help out including donating items to the silent auction and sponsorship opportunities and on their website.
