Lights. Camera. Action! The Upstate is full of talent, but sometimes it lacks the glitz and glamour of other locations. That being said, there are probably more Upstate connections to Hollywood than you would think; in fact, each of the ten counties of the Upstate has their own claim to fame. The George Clooney film Leatherheads (2008) was filmed in Greenville. In particular, you can spot the lobby of the Poinsett Hotel.
The entire lineup of the Marshall Tucker Band hails from Spartanburg, SC. You may recognize their songs Fire on the Mountain (1975) and Heard it in a Love Song (1977).
Chadwick Boseman, Marvel’s Black Panther (2018), was born in Anderson, SC. He graduated from T.L. Hannah High School where he wrote his first play, Crossroads.
Parts of The Fugitive (1993) were filmed in Walhalla. One scene in particular features the Stumphouse Tunnel. The film featured Julianne Moore, Tommy Lee Jones, and Harrison Ford.
Chill Factor (1999) starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Skeet Ulrich was filmed primarily in Liberty, SC.
Bo Hopkins, who appeared in the films The Wild Bunch (1969) and American Graffiti (1973) was raised in Greenwood, SC. He also has ties to Greenville, Lockhart, and Taylors.
A Union native, Don Rhymer wrote films such as Big Momma’s House (2000), Rio (2011), Rio 2 (2014), Ferdinand (2017), and the Disney Channel Original Movie Under Wraps (1997).
Actress Andie Macdowell, known for roles in Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), was born in Gaffney, SC in 1958.
Bring in the funk. One of the original lead vocalists from the renowned band Kool and the Gang was born in Laurens. James “J.T.” Taylor was the lead vocalist for the group throughout the eighties and part of the nineties.
The film Sleeping with the Enemy (1991) was filmed in Abbeville County. In fact, the scene where Julia Roberts is on a stage was filmed inside the Abbeville Opera House.
