Fresh Air Friday: Stumphouse Tunnel & Issaqueena Falls A favorite of In The Know Upstate, Stumphouse Tunnel, and Issaqueena Falls have been featured in other ITK articles such as Adventures of the Upstate, Upstate Did You Know, and Daytripper. Now they are having their Fresh Air Friday debut. Tips To Breathe In Difficulty: Easy Price: $2 Parking…
In the inaugural edition of Fresh Air Fridays, we visited Paris Mountain State Park as it is one of the most accessible parks in all of the Upstate and just a stone’s throw away from all the amenities multiple city centers have to offer. Today, though, I want to talk about a particular trail within the park, one that I neglected for too long but am now wearing down the soles of my boots upon once or twice a week. That trail is the Sulphur Springs Loop and I currently cannot get enough of it.
Sometimes the best outdoor destinations require a little more effort than we are accustomed to. Sure, we can all follow the signs to Jones Gap and Table Rock State Parks and find a nice place to park and some restrooms for a pit stop before we start our hike. Sometimes, though, a more unbridled version of Mother Nature calls and in these cases we just need to know where to look.
This week’s Fresh Air Friday is familiar to anyone who has been following ITK for quite some time. The Poinsett Bridge. That being said, today we are focusing on the less spooky side of things. The bridge is actually home to some incredible hiking. Along with the views, you’ll be learning some informative (and entertaining) history.
SC Highway 11 is a 120-mile route that offers a calming reprieve from the hustle and bustle of interstate 85. Highway 11 is a nature-lovers dream with plenty of hiking opportunities along the way. The route is dotted with an array of small towns that are worth exploring.
Turning a hobby into a passion can produce beautiful results, just take a look at the Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve. This garden is a true labor of love, and it shows. With so much natural beauty, you might forget that the bustling city of Spartanburg is only a few short miles away.
This week’s Fresh Air Friday takes us outside of the Upstate. Hot Springs, NC is just a short drive into the mountains, and it is so worth the trip. Nestled in a sleepy mountain town, Hot Springs is the perfect outdoor oasis for a family trip. My family and a group of friends recently completed our annual pilgrimage to Hot Springs, North Carolina and, as I am every year, am blown away by the fact that we have such a place this close to home. The sleepy little mountain town has everything you could possibly ask for in an outdoor adventure – the French Broad River, access to the Appalachian Trail, campsites and cabins, and (of course) a hot spring. All of this is roughly two hours or less from anywhere in the Upstate making it one of the most accessible resort towns you could ever ask for.
I know what you’re thinking, and no, there is not a bad time to visit a waterfall. Lucky for you, the Upstate has its fair share of fantastic views and crisp, cool water. Whether you enjoy the challenges of a hike to view a waterfall from the top, a relaxing walk in the park to enjoy the cool mist, or a nice backdrop for a relaxing afternoon, there is a waterfall for you.
Fresh Air Friday: Cedar Falls Park Looking for a new place to fish, swim, or just take a stroll? Allow us to introduce you to Cedar Falls Park in Fountain Inn, SC. The falls offer a nice change of pace to the usual hustle and bustle of parks like Falls Park or Cleveland Park. Not only…
