Humble Roots: Grounded in Quality
If You Only Have 60 Seconds…
- Humble Roots is a one man pimento cheese company in the Upstate of South Carolina owned and operated by Steven Reid.
- The cheese spreads are inspired by family traditions and his grandmother’s recipes.
- You can find Humble Roots Cheeses in farmer’s markets and specialty stores across the Upstate.
When you ask someone what their calling is, chances are you won’t expect their answer to be “pimiento cheese,” but Steven Reid gave us just this answer, so it’s no surprise that he is slinging some of the best pimiento cheese in the Upstate.
When Steven first went into the food business, his sights were set on a food truck. After saving up and purchasing a truck, fate had other plans. The engine blew on the truck shortly after opening, but this didn’t deter Steven from his larger dreams, and Humble Roots was born.
A Family Tradition
Humble Roots is a high quality, artisanal pimiento cheese company based off of Steven’s grandmother’s recipe. He traces his love of cooking to this special relationship with her, he even credits her with the name and the values of the company. “She was always a reminder to stay humble to my roots, and I wanted to make this business a way to honor that,” Steven told us.

The Cheesy Details
The company has experienced a wave of success since opening two years ago. Steven has been working farmers markets in Greenville, Taylors, Clemson, Travelers Rest, and Spartanburg as a way to spread the word about his product. Humble Roots has been a hit for pimiento cheese fans as well as those who aren’t typically into the spread. Customers agree that Humble Roots is a little bit different than your standard pimiento cheese. The recipe uses very little mayonnaise, and high-quality cheese sourced straight from farms. The recipes are innovative as well, with flavors like smoked gouda and goat cheese, shaking up the typical pimiento cheese flavor profile.
Humble Roots operates out of a professional coworking kitchen in Greenville, where Steven can interact with other chefs and business owners while creating a quality product. “The space here is just awesome,” Steven said. “We have been in this kitchen since May of 2015 when the company was started.”
With his eyes set on the future, Steven has plenty of goals for Humble Roots. While growth is a definite focus, Steven wants to continue to honor local business first. Humble roots can already be purchased through specialty stores like Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery, as well as Community Tap. Steven has more wholesale goals, and would like for Humble Roots to be a staple in over 100 specialty stores within a year. Steven has had to turn down larger offers simply because he felt the timing wasn’t right, and so much of his focus is on growing the business organically. Amidst this success, Steve still strives to deliver his mouth watering pimiento cheese to the area; “I want the humble roots label to stand for great food, and that goes for anything this business does.”
Moving forward, Steven would like to see Humble Roots offered in local hotel gift shops and menus throughout the Upstate, he also wants to expand the flavor options with even more tempting varieties. With his dedication to the local business scene and his tempting recipes, Steven has planted Humble Roots firmly in the Upstate.
