Perfect for: Casual lunch, dinner with family, incredible queso, more cheese than any one person should eat.
Menu: Mexican favorites
Bar/Drinks: Beer, wine, margaritas
Good to Know: El Poblano gets CROWDED. Line-out-the-door crowded. To remedy this, plan on going a little earlier or later than peak meal hours. There is a patio where karaoke is held each weekend.
Parking: Large parking lot surrounding the building, but it still manages to get crowded.
Bathroom: It’s a bathroom, what do you expect?
I don’t know about you, but I can always go for Mexican food. Chips, salsa, cheese, and tortillas. No matter the occasion, I am totally cool with putting these foodstuffs into my mouth. That being said, everyone has their favorite Mexican restaurant, one that is your go to. Going anywhere else, frankly, feels like cheating. I know I felt this way, until I experienced the amazing food at El Poblano in Union, SC. I have been visiting El Poblano for quite some time now, but I knew it was time for them to get some Forked Foodie love.
When you enter, you experience the typical Mexican restaurant traditions of being led to a table and being asked if you would like hot or mild salsa (the answer is always hot). This is where things start to differ from similar restaurants. El Poblano also gives you fresh Pico De Gallo with your chips. The Pico tastes fresh and has the perfect balance of flavor with a little kick to it. It isn’t too spicy for those who like their food mild, but it isn’t too mild for those of us who like to feel the heat. It’s perfect.
Keeping with the theme, I order a spicy cheese dip. Trust me on this one; you’re going to want the spicy. You know cheese dip, good in all of its various iterations. However, there is something about the spicy cheese dip at El Poblano that really takes things to a whole new level. Regular cheese dip can be a very rote affair. This spicy cheese dip delivers the perfect smoky spice to the creamy gooey white cheese you know and love. You feel the heat on the back of your tongue, but you can still taste the sumptuous cheese.
For an entrée, I order the chilaquiles. If you aren’t familiar with this dish, it is a Mexican brunch dish that consists of tortilla chips in a rich red sauce topped with chicken and loads of melted cheese. The dish is typically served with rice and beans, but here is a pro tip: the rice at El Poblano is so good, just order all rice.
Let me break this plate of food down for you. The sauce that the chips are doused in is so flavorful. You get the acidity of the tomato and the richness of the spices blend perfectly. As the sauce makes the chips slightly soggy, the succulent chicken and the decadent cheese marry to make this dish sing. Every bite is a blending of flavors that blows my mind. Remember the delicious rice I mentioned? There is so much garlic flavor in this rice, it is some of the most flavorful rice I have tasted. Want to minimize effort? Scoop up your rice with a chip and you have an edible utensil. I know, genius.
Everything I have tried from El Poblano has been fantastic. The Arroz Con Pollo has the perfect char flavor on the chicken, and the rice is creamy with cheese. Even something as basic as a taco is bursting with flavor at El Poblano.
No meal is complete without dessert, and at El Poblano, it is complimentary. That’s right, FREE! After each meal, you are treated to ice cream on the house. The ice cream is served with quick fried sopapillas for an added bonus.
If you ever find yourself in Union with a craving for some insanely good Mexican, then El Poblano should be first on your list. I know it is on mine!
