SC Highway 11 is a 120-mile route that offers a calming reprieve from the hustle and bustle of interstate 85. Highway 11 is a nature-lovers dream with plenty of hiking opportunities along the way. The route is dotted with an array of small towns that are worth exploring.
This week’s Fresh Air Friday takes us outside of the Upstate. Hot Springs, NC is just a short drive into the mountains, and it is so worth the trip. Nestled in a sleepy mountain town, Hot Springs is the perfect outdoor oasis for a family trip. My family and a group of friends recently completed our annual pilgrimage to Hot Springs, North Carolina and, as I am every year, am blown away by the fact that we have such a place this close to home. The sleepy little mountain town has everything you could possibly ask for in an outdoor adventure – the French Broad River, access to the Appalachian Trail, campsites and cabins, and (of course) a hot spring. All of this is roughly two hours or less from anywhere in the Upstate making it one of the most accessible resort towns you could ever ask for.
Looking to book a family vacation but just can’t seem to land on a good spot? The Great Wolf Lodge is a resort and indoor waterpark located in Concord, NC. It is only about a two-hour drive from the Upstate, and the kids are going to flip when they hear all about the Great Wolf Lodge.
Not only was the place clean, it was stocked with just about everything you could possibly need for an overnight stay. From a bottle opener and cooking spices in the kitchen, to a nice entertainment center stocked with DVDs in the living area, to even travel-size toiletries in the main bathroom: they had it all.
The minute I turned into the tree-filled circular driveway of the Swamp Rabbit Inn in Travelers Rest, I couldn’t help but sigh in relief. I was taking my team for a well-deserved break and just the sight of the large, beautiful front porch was enough to make me slightly giddy with the thought of relaxation.
Sometimes I feel like I live to shop. It can be a problem, but it can also be kind of fabulous. There are plenty of amazing shops and boutiques around the Upstate, but sometimes you just want to head to a big city for some big shopping. Lucky for us Upstaters, Charlotte is only a short drive away!
